Account Manager, Book Trade (New York)
Phaidon seeks a New York Account Manager to support the North American sales team in their efforts to broaden exposure of Phaidon and Monacelli. This is an ideal position for a motivated publishing rep seeking to expand their experience in trade book sales to indie bookstores and museums in the New York metro area including Barnes & Noble.
Reporting to the Director of Special Markets and Retail Sales, this position liaises with all departments within a dynamic setting and alongside colleagues who are creative, articulate, and passionate about the arts and contemporary culture.
Responsibilities include:
- Steward a defined list of targeted, NY based accounts.
- Organize and execute all stages of the sales cycle each season from appointment scheduling, new title presentation, order procurement, and follow up.
- Analyze sales trends, gap analysis with accounts, sell-through data, etc.
- Identify and develop new business.
- Act as liaison between accounts and Hachette Book Group – responding to customer inquiries, processing and tracking orders, et al.
- Steady and reliable account communication.
- Update broader team weekly on season progress at the title and account level.
- Provide on-site support at author events, launch parties, and seasonal b2b trade shows, occasionally outside standard work hours.
- Collaborate with sales, marketing, and PR teams each season to develop creative strategies that will lead to reaching or surpassing yearly budget goals.

Editor or Senior Editor, Monacelli Press
We are seeking an Editor or Senior Editor to join our growing editorial team to edit new books in a range of categories: art, design, architecture, and select custom publishing. The role will involve both originating new books and editing books acquired by the publisher. A senior editor should be experienced with identifying authors and trends, formulating proposals, creating budgets and financial models, finalizing contracts, and playing a hands-on role from idea conception to design, editing, and final publication. All editors work collaboratively with the publisher, production, marketing, and sales to ensure a smooth and seamless publishing process. This position will require extensive interaction with our authors, artists, museums, galleries, and global brands, and will require superb communication skills. The candidate is highly creative, detail oriented, passionate about the arts and popular culture and has previous experience and a proven track record in illustrated book publishing.
Key Objectives
- Editing 8 to 10 books per year from inception to final files
- Identify talent / market trends and can connect with potential authors/artists
- Develop book proposals and bring ideas from concept to approved outcomes
- Finalize agreements with a clear understanding of the business and financial structure of a book deal
- Manage the editorial process from beginning to end with an emphasis on delivering new and distinctive packages
- Build design concepts for each book and work with designers to publish compelling and commercial books
- Work with global sales, marketing, PR to represent new titles and present these at sales conferences and other venues
Skills and experience required
- Book editing experience, particularly in illustrated/art books; to be considered for the Senior Editor position, a proven track record of acquiring and editing successful books
- A background and/or interest in Phaidon and Monacelli’s core publishing categories: art, architecture, design, landscape/gardens, and interiors
- Excellent communication skills, detail oriented
- Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style; experience copy editing and proofreading
Compensation
The compensation range for this position, dependent on experience and title, is $58,000 to $75,000. Benefits include excellent medical, dental, vision, PTO, and more. This job is based in New York City and you are expected to work from our lower Manhattan office three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and work from home Monday and Friday.

Commissioning Editor – New York

We work with the world’s most influential writers, chefs, architects, designers, photographers, and thinkers to produce innovative books on food, architecture, design, art, photography, fashion, general interest, travel, and illustrated books for children.
An exciting opportunity has arisen in our New York office for a commissioning editor with strong commercial acumen, a collaborative approach, and background in visual culture. Working closely with the Publisher, you will be responsible for commissioning and creating books on a wide range of subjects, identifying and bringing to fruition books for a broad and global readership.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Identifying commercially attractive ideas for books for a global audience, across the Art, Architecture, Design, Fashion, General Interest, and Photography lists, and taking them successfully through the acquisition process
- Sourcing and commissioning the perfect team of contributors
- Project managing your books, working closely with relevant in-house and freelance staff as necessary
- Working in partnership with the Editorial, Design, and Production teams to ensure your books are created on time and within budget
- Liaising with the Marketing and Sales teams to help your projects exceed their potential.
Skills and experience required:
- Experience publishing in the visual arts, with broad-ranging knowledge of the subject areas.
- Extensive contacts within the subject areas and a talent for building excellent relationships.
- Proven negotiating, decision-making, and analytical skills, as well as financial acumen.
- Creativity, can-do attitude, and commercial awareness.
- Outstanding organizational and communication abilities, with proven skills in multi-contributor or complex project management, and confidence when both working within a team and with autonomy.
- A dedication to excellence and accuracy, and an eye for detail.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in illustrated book publishing is desirable for this role, as is basic knowledge of InDesign.
